What type of toys are good to take travelling?

When you thinking about what kind of toys to take travelling for 2 and 3 year olds, you want to consider a few things.

  • Is it small? It has to fit in your luggage, with everything else you also need to take!
  • Does it pack easily? Some toys aren’t shaped to fit in luggage easily!
  • Is it a toy that can entertain your toddler over and over again? If it’s something that may be interested in only once or twice, it’s probably not worth taking.
  • Are there multiple pieces that can get lost? Or is there an easy way to keep everything together?

Keeping those things in mind, we’ve rounded up some great travel toys for 2 and 3 year olds. From books and activities to art supplies and stuffed animals, there’s something here for every kind of toddler personality. So pack up these travel-friendly toys and enjoy your travels!

We’ve listed amazon links for easy purchasing, but you probably already have most of these things around the house!

Perfect Toys to Take Travelling with 2 and 3 Year Olds

Water Wow

These books are a great no-mess activity to take travelling! Each book comes with a refillable water pen. Simply fill the pen with water to ‘colour’ in the scenes, then let the page dry and the picture will be erased – ready to colour in again and again. The chunky pen is easy for toddlers to hold and stores right in the front cover, making it a perfect toy to travel with. Although the age suggests 3-6 years, my guys used these from age 2 -4. You can find them here on Amazon.

Colouring Books

Colouring is a great way to keep toddlers busy! At this age, colouring pages with less details are ideal, or bring along some blank paper. And be sure to pack some chunky crayons! These egg-shaped crayons are perfect for toddlers or those just beginning to colour.

Books

Reading is always important – even while travelling! And even if toddlers can’t read yet, they’ll still love looking at the pictures. Books are also a great way to pass some time waiting at the airport or for reading before bed. Be sure to bring some favourites from home!

Magna Doodle

This is a classic toy that never fails to entertain! The Magna Doodle is a drawing board with a magnetic surface, so kids can make designs, then erase and have a fresh surface to draw over and over again. The magnetic pen attaches with a string so it won’t get lost easily, which is perfect when you are travelling!

Tangle Junior

These hands-on toys are meant to keep kids’ hands busy! Made to be twisted, turned and manipulated in various ways, Tangles are calming and a great way to pass time while waiting, whether in the car, an airport or a hotel room. They are also pretty small and a great toy to travel with!

Dry Erase Books

Similar to the Water Wow, dry erase books can be drawn on, wiped clean and then reused over and over again while you are travelling. Many come with a holder for the pen, which keeps it from getting lost. The downside is the markers CAN be messy, so this may be a good thing if your child is 3 and up, or used to using markers.

Busy Bags

Busy bags are perfect for travel! These are small bags filled with different activities, designed to keep your toddler ‘busy’! Anything works, from puzzles to matching games or other challenges that can keep your kids occupied! You can find pre-made ones on Amazon or Pinterest has some amazing ideas if you want to DIY your own!

Stacking Cups

I will admit, I hadn’t thought of taking stacking cups with us when travelling – I thought of them as a bath toy. But a friend suggested it and it was a great suggestion! Yes, they are usually bath toys, but they also work amazing to keep kids occupied on the plane, in the airport or even the hotel! Stack them, fill them or sort things into them – the opportunities are endless!  Definitely one of the most used toys that we travelled with when the boys were young!

Playdough

While I’m not biggest fan of playdoh, kids are! And playdoh is something small, easy to travel with, while providing hours of entertainment! Just be sure to pack in a container with a sealed lid and play with it on a placemat or hard floor – it’s not too great on carpet!

Stuffed Animal

Kids love cuddling up with something that’s theirs, something familiar from home, something comforting that feels like home. Bringing a favourite stuffed animal or blankie is perfect for providing a bit of comfort and is still small enough to fit into luggage without a problem!
